Tailgating Fun: 8 Cornhole Tips & Tricks

Last updated on March 5, 2018 By Adam Nolan 1 Comment

Cornhole is a fun game played by kids, teens, and adults. It’s not your usual backyard game. It’s actually a popular one for cookouts, as well as tailgating fans like you and me. In fact, there’s an American organization for cornhole enthusiasts. If you’re new to the game or just looking for some pointers, we’ve got some ideas for you below.

Do what works for you

The common stance in cornhole is to hurl the bag with your dominant hand while stepping the opposite forward. It’s pretty much basic. It’s a no-brainer. But this isn’t a standard thing to do. Some people just stand still when pitching. Others step the same foot as their dominant hand when throwing. Do whatever works for you. There are no solid rules.

Forget the hole

Beginners are obsessed with the hole. Those who focus on the hole usually miss it. Instead, focus on putting the bag on a favorable spot on the board. That’s about six inches into the board. Once you aimed for this favorable distance, use speed to attempt to slip it into the hole.

Treat the bag like a Frisbee

Does that even make sense? Well, to some pros, it does. What they’re saying essentially is to spin-toss the bag to give it more momentum. This way, the bag has greater chances at landing onto your target position. This is hard to accomplish, but it can be learned with practice. Next time you hold the bag, think of it as a Frisbee.

Master the four shots

Are you familiar with the slider, air mail, push, and blocker? These are four types of shots cornhole players make. The slider shot aims to land the bag about 6 inches from the hole — on the front of the board — and then attempting to slide it into the hole. When making a blocker shot, you drop the bag adjacent to the hole. The purpose of this shot is to keep your opponent from taking advantage of the slider shot. On the other hand, the push shot aims at either slipping your bag into the hole or pushing a blocker away. The most challenging shot, however, is the air mail, which aims the bag directly into the hole.

Stop being too competitive

Everyone wants to win, but you can’t win all the time. The mistake of many beginners is to exhaust themselves trying to prove they can win. Your chances of making good throws decrease as you spend more time playing the game. You can only play for so long until you get tired and frustrated. If your friend is doing better than you today, leave it at that. Don’t try to overcompensate.

Take it easy out there

This is supposed to be fun. So, if you’re too bent on winning and proving yourself to the other players, you’re spoiling the game. Relax! Don’t be too serious.

Practice, practice, practice!

The only way to get better at playing cornhole is to play it over and over to make you more familiar with the game and develop tactics that make you a skilled player, thus increasing your chances of winning.

Invite friends!

Playing it alone is never fun. Tell your friends about it. Set up your cornhole board. Get some beer and chips.
