My Fitness Pal

Available for: Android

Cost: Free

Download link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.myfitnesspal.android

This is the most popular food tracking app out there. They have the most comprehensive list of foods, making it easy to track your food. You can scan a barcode or search for a food item by name or brand. You can feel confident about the foods listed in the search because when users submit calorie counts for submission to the database, there is a team of people at Under Armour, the parent company of My Fitness Pal, who verify the information. You can add friends on the app and share your food logs with them. This can be especially helpful if you have a personal trainer or nutritionist as they can see what you are eating and help you adjust your food intake to better suit your needs. You can also keep a blog, share pictures of your food and much more with the app.

Fitbit

Available for: iOS, Android and Windows devices

Cost: Free

Download Link: https://www.fitbit.com/app

While this app is designed to be used in conjunction with a Fitbit device, you can still download and use the app to track your food. While it does not have as large of a selection of food as My Fitness Pal, it will give you plenty of options and makes it easy to put in your own custom foods. You can even save your favorite foods so you can easily choose them in the app. In addition to the food intake you can also track your water intake. If you have a Fitbit then you can track much more than just this. The app even syncs with My Fitness Pal for people who like the greater food choices and don’t want to enter their food twice (if you are using the app for other means, such as activity tracking).

Noom Coach

Available for: iOS and Android

Cost: Free with upgrade options

Download Link: https://www.noom.com/coach/

Noom offers a full suite of different weight loss apps and this is the option that helps with food tracking. To start with users create an account and plan out what their goals are for losing weight. It is designed to help teach people about making better food choices. When a food is logged it gives the user a red, yellow, or green sticker. This helps them to see the better options in their diet and where they need to be cutting back or keeping to a minimum.

My Food Diary

Available for: iOS, Android

Cost: Free 7 day trial, $9 per month after trial

Download Link: http://www.myfooddiary.com/

This is an app that offers more than 80,000 foods and the nutritional information for them. There is a desktop app that works in conjunction with the mobile app. The difference with this app compared to many of the other food tracking apps out there is that it does more than just provide caloric information. This also helps people see the amount of nutrients they are getting from their food, such as calcium and fiber so they can make the adjustments as needed.

Lose It!

Available for: Android

Cost: Free version, with premium features for $39.9 a year

Download Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fitnow.loseit&hl=en

Lose It! is an app with a desktop app as well. It is designed to combine all the features of losing weight, from meal planning and tracking to exercise and weight trends. You can set goals for yourself for your meals as well as fitness. The app offers a My Plate Report that looks at the nutrition as well as the calories consumed for the person so they can see how they do over time rather than just looking at a day to day basis. The free version has very basic features while the paid version has a full suite of features to offer.

HAPIcoach

Available for: iOS and Android

Cost: Free, though it is intended to work with HAPI products

Download Link: https://www.hapi.com/hapicoach

HAPI is a brand that has a suite of fitness and health products. This includes an activity tracker, a blood pressure monitor and a smart scale. This app is designed to work in conjunction with the products, though you can create an account and use it by itself. This takes a different approach than other food tracking apps as it does not rely on calorie counting. Rather you take a picture of your food and it allows nutritionists to rate your food choices. You will also have a log of the food you’ve eaten as well as what the experts say about it.
