7 Tips On How To Be A Better Hitter In Baseball

Last updated on March 5, 2018 By Adam Nolan Leave a Comment

Mastering the perfect baseball swing is an art form. It takes patience, practice, and persistence – it doesn’t matter if you have the best youth baseball bat for the money cause if you haven’t perfected your technique, then you won’t see those awesome results on the field. Luckily, you don’t have to try and become a better hitter on your own, as we have compiled these tips and tricks for you to follow that will help you start swinging that bat like the pros in no time at all. While you may not find yourself able to utilize each strategy in every hit depending on the pitch you are thrown, even knowing a few of these can help improve your performance. Practice them daily and see how much your swing improves from week to week and soon enough you will be one of the most valued members of the batting lineup.

Keep Your Front Side Firm

Make sure your front leg stays firm, providing a good support system for your body. Keep in mind, this doesn’t mean it has to be rigid, it just needs to stay firm enough to keep your body where it is supposed to be during the swing: Body and hands stay behind the baseball!

Hands Stay Palm Up, Palm Down on the Bat

This seems like a no brainer, but hand position is crucial to making sure you get a good swing in every time. For those who hit right handed, your right hand will be palm up while your left hand maintains a palm down position. Keeping a palm up, palm down grip on your bat ensures that you will have a powerful, sturdy swing.

Keep Alignment in Mind

Your back hip, back knee, and head should all keep a straight line during your swing. If it helps, you can paint a mental picture of your bat driving through the center of these three body parts as your body rotates itself around it. This will keep your body in the best position possible: Not too far forward, not too far back, and just right.

Back Foot Stays on Its Toe

If you are properly executing your swing, you will find that your body will start a natural rotation. The end result is your back foot maintaining minimal contact with the ground and only your toe will be left in contact with the ground as your body completes a pivot driven by your swing.

Keep An Eye on the Ball

This is another obvious point, but it is something that a lot of batters actually forget to do (or don’t know how to do properly). You need to make sure you aren’t just looking at the ball as a whole, but that you are seeing its contact point.

Center Your Head Between Your Feet

You should be envisioning yourself in a triangle when it comes to this position. Your head needs to be the top of the triangle between both of your feet. This will help create a strong stance, which will lead to a strong hit.

Bend That Top Arm

Keeping your elbows in will help you to keep a powerful swing, and creates maximum torque when you rotate. By doing this, the result will be a bent top arm. The more bent the better, as a straightened arm will cause you to lose that power you gain by keeping those elbows tucked in.

If you found yourself here because you are struggling with your swing, how many of these tips were you utilizing? If you practice these daily you should see a great improvement in your swing. While natural ability does come in to play in baseball, so does the mechanics behind a good swing. For this reason, you can’t expect to achieve a master swing with no practice on the mechanics of it. Give these a try and watch yourself become a better hitter with each passing week.
