5 Essential Tailgating Drinking Games

Last updated on March 5, 2018 By Adam Nolan Leave a Comment

We all know that tailgating is all about hanging out with your buddies, getting your drink on and chowing down on some of that yummy game day food. But let’s face it, it’s also about drinking games, right? I mean, all that beer and all those hours before kickoff – what better thing to do than a few competitive drinking games.

Well, if your game day drinking games are getting a little stale, check out our list of drinking game ideas and see if you can’t find something new to add to the rotation this time. Who knows, you just might find one that you’re good at this time!

1. Dodge Beer

For this game, you need a table, a ping pong ball and two cups full of beer.  To get started, put one cup full of beer at each end of the table. And one person stands in front of each cup. Now that everyone is in position, player one bounces a ping pong ball and tried to hit the other player’s cup. If player one misses, then it’s player two’s chance. As soon as a player’s ping pong ball hits the opponent’s cup anywhere, the player who bounced the ball starts chugging their beer. Now, the other player has to scramble to get the ball in their hand. As soon as the ball is in hand, the chugging player must stop chugging. Object of the game – you win by being the first to finish your beer. Game on.

2. Shotgun Race

Yeah, everyone probably already does this one, but it’s widely played for a reason – it’s fun! If you’ve never played, or just don’t know it by this name, here’s a quick rundown of the rules for you. Everyone who wants to play grabs a can of beer and holds it sideways. Put a hole in the side with a pocket knife or something similar. Once everyone gets the hole in their beer can, at the same time (you need someone to announce “Go!”) each person holding a punctured beer starts drinking it as quickly as possible. First person to completely finish the beer in the can wins.

3. Beer Pong

I hope that you’re already playing this one cause its a classic. And if not, you’re already going to have a table for the Dodge Beer game above, so you might as well use it for a little beer pong. And honestly, does this classic drinking game ever go out of style? Nope, never.

4. Flip Cup

Another staple when tailgating is flip cup and it is awesome when you have a decent group of people with you. Now, if it’s just a couple of you who want to play, then I’d suggest skipping this game cause you’ll be hammered before you realize it. Instead, aim for at least six players. Again, you’ll need a table for this one and the players need to be split up evenly on each side. The ends of the table mark your start and anchor points. The game starts at the anchor end with players on each side toasting or chanting, then chugging their drink. Once the beer is gone from the cup, the player puts the cup on the edge of table and attempts to flip it from the bottom so that it lands with the rim on the table. Once this happens, it’s the next player’s turn. First side to finish wins. And you can do a best of five games or best of seven games for more fun.

5. Beer Cornhole

Okay, you got us, this game is really more of a drink beer while playing cornhole game, but hear us out. You’re probably already going to be playing cornhole, right? So, increase the ante by declaring that each time the opposite team makes a point, beer chugging is required. The longer this game goes on, the more awesome it because hand-eye coordination gets terrible and those bean bags get tossed all over the place.
